History – how did skiing start in Davos

Davos was first known as a summer mountain health resort before becoming the most popular holiday destination for winter sports. Until 1865, many individuals went to Davos to benefit from the fresh Alpine air.

The first pair of skiers from Norway arrived in Davos in 1883 and races took place. The first distance (over 12km) ran through the Mattawald forest and the race was won by a Davos local, an Englishman and a Norwegian taking second and third place.
